To have a successful orthodontic experience, our Orthocare Systems Orthodontics team is committed to your oral health and alignment in St. Louis, Missouri. In fact, our orthodontist, Dr. E. Glenn Glassman wants to make sure that you are taking good care of your teeth and braces as you go.

For a beautiful smile when you are done with braces, you will want to maintain excellent oral hygiene care by nurturing your teeth and gums along the way. You still must keep tooth decay and gum disease from entering your smile, so getting rid of oral bacteria and plaque daily is essential. Along with routine professional dental cleanings, your daily oral hygiene efforts will ensure that when your braces come off, you will be free from cavities or gingivitis.

This means cleaning your smile after you eat to avoid bits of food particles and oral bacteria from sticking around. You can clean your teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush which is easy on tooth enamel, gum tissue, and wires and brackets. You can also use an orthodontic toothbrush which is designed to clean around braces. And using an interdental toothbrush will ensure that you can clean between the brackets and your teeth.

Just as with cleaning your smile, flossing in braces can’t be done with a toothbrush. Flossing tools are created to clean those places your toothbrush just can’t. Flossing removes plaque and debris around the gum line, between your pearly whites, and the spaces under metal wires. Orthodontic floss, pre-threaded flossers, or water flossers are all effective at keeping plaque and debris away.

Be sure to maintain all scheduled follow-up visits with your orthodontist to stay on track, address any problems you may have, and to ensure that your braces are in good shape.
